I attended part of the opening weekend outside the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. The piece that I had seen advertised via a newsletter email was a reproduction performance piece of the United Nations using dogs!
Bennett Millers Dashund U.N. is a large scale installation and also a performance work that tries to examine the United Nations as a risk management organisation. The reason for using only dachshunds or 'sausage dogs' is that they are the only type of dog to have a racial variety within the breed.
This was one of those events that the Ikon regularly organise but then you come away feeling a little short changed. I attended with my wife and daughter because I thought they might like to see something a bit more challenging but also with a comic side to it. There was an amazing turnout for the event and I was quite surprised how large the crowd was. At first I didn't quite understand what all the fuss was about but when the dogs were led on to the platforms one by one it looked quite engaging and suddenly the assembled crowd found it quite fascinating. Let's be honest, watching the dogs barking at each other wasn't unlike watching our own parliament on the television. It was amusing when one dog would start barking and all the others would turn round to look at it and then another one would start and so on and so on.
