The last time I was in London I was amazed how quickly The Shard has been constructed. Its location in Central London, more or less next door to Guys Hospital (which incidentally has a great looking cafe outside). See below.
It is a fascinating architectural treat especially when you are near it, looking upwards, which for me is one of the best views. Inside will be a mix of offices, restaurants, apartments and a viewing gallery.
The location of it though, is something of a problem. Whilst it is an engineering feat in itself, it doesn't really enliven or blend in with its surroundings. It would look more in character in Canary Wharf but not in its current location. But I remember seeing a picture of the now famous 'Gherkin' and couldn't believe why they had built it where they had. Now when you walk past it, it doesn't look that out of place and has sort of blended in to its environment. I'm not sure that it's a case of truly fitting in with its surroundings but more of a case of not shocking anymore and a sense of acceptance.
Another consideration in the current climate is the fear that it is helping to widen the divide between the rich and poor in the capital. On the surface, London appears a very affluent place but when you delve beneath the surface and veer away from the main roads, you see how grimy it really is and how run down some of the properties really are. Does the capital really need any more posh restaurants and up market hotels? Only a small percentage of people will be able to eat and stay there. Plus there is going to be a proposed charge of £20 just to ride up to the observation deck to see the view over London. This seems quite expensive but no more so that a trip up the Eiffel Tower which if I remember correctly, is just as expensive. The difference being that I would prefer a view over Paris than over London any day.
As a design icon, it is very exciting that we have it in London to join the other famous landmarks and it entices you to aspire to better things and to inspire future generations. But is it the right time to be building something so extravagant and ostentatious in these lean times. London is a City of diversity but not always one of limitless income and I feel that some will feel they are having their noses rubbed in it!
